Although Denver’s women’s golf team entered the second and final round of the Peg Barnard Invitational golf tournament at Stanford Golf Course with a one shot lead over Stanford, the Pioneers were unable to hold that lead and ended the contest with second place behind host team Stanford.

Freshman Stephanie Sherlock continued her hot play shooting a second consecutive 2-under par 69. Sherlock was also one of only three players to finish the 36-hole tournament under par as she shot 69-69 – 138 and finished in third place.

Sophomore Katie Kempter played outstanding golf for DU. She was one of only eight players to shoot a final round under par with a 1-under 70 and a two-round total of 142, which was even par.

“Honestly,B IB hadB noB ideaB whereB IB stoodB afterB theB firstB round.B IB knewB IB

wasB sevenB shotsB backB fromB theB leadB andB that’sB aB lotB toB makeB upB inB 18B holes,” said Kempter about the first round of the tournament.

“IB justB wentB outB theB nextB dayB andB wentB aboutB myB businessB tryingB toB

Senior Emily Hoeper also played very well for DU, shooting a final round 1-over par 72 and ending in a tie for seventh place with a 36-hole score of 1-over par 143.

The Pioneers’ other counting score on Saturday was posted by sophomore Sara Djos, who shot a final round 79 and finished in 58th place.

“IB haveB toB sayB thatB IB haveB toB workB onB everyB partB ofB myB gameB beforeB theB

DU’s women’s golf team played very well in the opening round of the tournament in the first day.

For the first round of the tournament, Sherlock shot 2-under par 69, helping the 19th-ranked Pioneers to a 2-over par 286. Of the four players for DU that finished in the top 15, Sherlock was one of five players to finish the first round at even-par or better as she shot 34-35 – 69 and finished the opening round in second place.

Hoeper was another outstanding Pioneer in the opening round, shooting 71 and ending the first round in a two-way tie for fourth place. Kempter also performed very well firing 1-over par 72 and finishing in a three-way tie for sixth place. The women’s golf team will travel to Orlando, Fla. on April 14 where they will compete in the Sun Belt Conference Championship.
