With victories over Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky last weekend, the DU women’s soccer team extended its winning streak to a record 10 in a row.
The Pioneers crushed strong Sun Belt Conference rival Middle Tennessee 4-1 Friday and closed out the weekend with a 5-0 stomping of fellow SBC opponent Western Kentucky Sunday.
Middle Tennessee is considered one of Denver’s chief rivals in the SBC and entered Friday’s game with an eight game win streak of their own.
After a scoreless first half, Middle Tennessee struck first in the 46th minute, bringing the score to 1-0. Nevertheless, the Pioneers did not get distracted and wrapped up the game in style. All four of the Pioneers’ goals against Middle Tennessee came in the second half.
Junior midfielder Jenna Billingsley, freshman midfielder Lizzy Carlson, junior midfielder Teryn Hemmings and junior defender Elise Mascitelli found the back of the net. Hemmings also notched her team-leading 31st goal of the season.
Hemmings, Carlson, and senior defender Lleane Grimditch each contributed an assist.
Middle Tennessee’s frustration at the Pioneers’ offensive prowess was evident. MT drew two red cards and a yellow card.
The women built on Friday’s impressive victory and crushed Western Kentucky in a 5-0 rout Sunday.
Billingsley turned in an especially commanding performance, scoring three goals (a “hat trick”) in the first 14 minutes.
Freshman forward Mariah Johnston and senior midfielder Laura Mann each added a goal, while Grimditch, Hemmings, Mann and sophomore forward Dana Schonberger earned assists.
The Pioneers’ defense was equally impressive. Senior goalkeeper Dani Wiley had little to do as WK was not able to attempt even a single shot on goal. By comparison, DU had 21 shots on goal.
The women’s soccer team will play North Texas on Friday, October 27th, at 3 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
