The DU women’s volleyball team fell to 3-3 in Sun Belt Conference play after splitting games this past weekend against Florida Atlantic University and Florida International University, in Miami.
After a dominating three game sweep against Florida Atlantic last Friday, the Pioneers lost a tight match to the Golden Panthers of Florida International on Sunday.
In Friday’s match, the Pioneers had 15 more kills than FAU (7-10, 4-3), while winning the first three games, 30-24, 30-28 and 30-28, for a 3-0 sweep.
Sophomore outside hitter Holly Benson was one of three Pioneers who reached double digits in kills with a game high 15. Junior middle blocker Kim Muller and senior outside hitter Lisa Hunter both had ten kills.
Led by junior Alyssa Hampton, whose 16 digs were the most in the game, the Pioneers notched 61 digs as a team.
However, the momentum built off of this dominating win wasn’t enough to help the Pioneers defeat the Golden Panthers Sunday morning.
Winning only the third game of the match, the Pioneers fell 3-1 against FIU (16-4, 8-0).
Though the Pioneers did out-block FIU 11-6 for the match, the Pioneers struggled on offense with a .139 attack percentage.
Once again, Benson, Muller and Hunter were in double digits in kills, with Hunter leading the Pioneers with 17. Freshman setter Claire Maxwell had a team high 49 assists in the game.
Last weekend’s series in Florida marked the third straight time this year that the Pioneers have split SBC games. They are now 3-3 in SBC play on the year and 10-8 overall.
The Pioneers are next in action this Friday, as they take on the University of New Orleans in an SBC match-up at Hamilton Gym at 7 p.m.
