The annual Homecoming weekend featured a formal dance at a downtown hotel, a parade, two hockey games and the selection of Homecoming Royalty.
The Pioneer hockey team split the two games against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. At the Saturday night game the winners of Homecoming king and queen where announced.
On Saturday the hockey team won 5-1. During the first intermission they announced Homecoming Royalty with Clint Emmerich and Megan Schlessman crowned as king and queen.
Their court consisted of Monica Kumar, Troy Hoshimoto, Kat Walsh, Ryan Seay, Lara Smedley and Alex Lomas.
At Friday night’s game many fans came out to support the team. The DU Cheerleaders, who usually only go to men’s and women’s basketball games attended to help keep the crowd enthused.
“We want to show all sports our support. We are here for all of DU,” said Megan Rivera, head cheerleader.
The events officially began last Wednesday with programs at the Daniels College of Business and the Lamont music school.
Thursday featured a formal dance for students that was held at the Monaco Hotel downtown.
Friday’s events included campus tours, residence hall tours and informational sessions about majors and study abroad opportunities.
There was also a gymnastics team open house and a men’s soccer match against San Jose State University, DU won the game.
Saturday was filled with brunches and lunches sponsored by various student organizations including the Hillel Center, 1981 reunion campus tour, alumni brunch with the Chancellor Robert Coombe. Ground breaking ceremonies for their new fraternity houses and house tours were held.
The annual parade marched down University Boulevard at 2 p.m. More than 300 people watched some 180 people marching. Participants included AUSA Senate, Club Sports, Delta Delta Delta, Sigma Chi, Gamma Phi Beta and Beta Theta Pi, Alpa Gamma Delta, SigmaAlpha Epsilon, Delta Gamma, Theta Chi, Club Cycling, Pioneer Pep Band, Daniels, UBSA, Denver Mounted Police, Women’s gymnastics and the DU cheerleaders.
The weekend highlight was the second game that filled Magness Arena.
“This is how the fans expect them to play. I have never see this big of support for the hockey team since I got here,” said Conor McGahey, Pioneer hockey announcer. “The freshmen are excitable they are true fans. No problem with attendance if they team gives us at least one win per weekend.”
