Adam Holmstrom is playing like an All-American for DU’s tennis squad.
Holmstrom made it to the round of 16 before being knocked out of the main draw of the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships at Tulsa, Okla. last Friday.
Holmstrom, a Junior, was defeated by Kevin Anderson of Illinois 6-4, 6-2 Friday.
To set up a match against Anderson, Holmstrom defeated Tulsa’s Federico Soriano 6-1, 6-1 and Erling Tveit of Mississippi 6-3, 6-2.
Holmstrom entered the Championships as the No. 11 seed.
Holmstrom almost made the main draw of the Championships in doubles action as he and his partner, Junior Niklas Persson, came one win shy of the main draw.
The DU pairing was defeated by the pair of Matt Christian and Willy Lock of Northwestern 8-4 on Thursday after winning their first two qualifying matches.
Senior Nejc Smole also came one win shy of joining Holmstrom in the main draw of the tournament. Smole lost 6-4, 6-0 Jakob Klaeson of Mississippi on Thursday, giving Klaeson the spot in the main draw.
Holmstrom and the Pioneers will be in action in two weeks at the ITA Regionals in Las Vegas, Nev. The Regional tournament is a qualifying tournament for Nationals.
“He has a good chance to win it,” Timo Kienle says about his teammates chances in Las Vegas. “Holmstrom is the man; he’s playing well right now.”
Holmstrom has defeated two players in the top 10 the past two weeks and, according to Kienle, Holmstrom should be in the top 20 nationally.
Matches begin on Wednesday, Oct. 18 and continue through the weekend. The Pioneers plan on being well represented with Holmstrom leading the way.
