The DU women’s golf team remained red hot this season as the players dominated the field at the Ron Moore Invitational in Highlands Ranch last Monday and Tuesday.
The Pioneers set a school scoring record 54-hole score of 15-under par (849), while separating themselves by 22 shots over second place Brigham Young University.
All five of the Pioneers’ starters finished in the top 10 individually, as DU shot three consecutive under par rounds as a team, a first in team history.
Leading the way for the Pioneers was sophomore Dawn Shockley, whose 7-under par total of 209 was good for a solo second place finish. Shockley shot under par in all three rounds in route to her best career finish as a Pioneer.
After firing back to back under par team scores, including a school record 9-under par 279, in the first two rounds Monday, the Pioneers jumped out to a commanding 22 shot lead.
The night of rest did little to cool down a team looking to win its second consecutive tournament to start off the season, as the Pioneers continued shooting blistering numbers with a final round 3-under par 285, good for a 22 shot win over BYU.
Including Shockley’s 7-under par, second place finish, the Pioneers had three players finish the tournament under par.
The second was Pioneer senior and last year’s individual tournament champion, Emily Hoeper, who shot opening rounds of 69 and 70 to tie for first place at 5- under par, before cooling off with a final round 75, good for a fourth place finish.
Next for the Pioneers was freshman Stephanie Sherlock, who was the last of the Pioneers to finish under par after ending up one shot behind Hoeper with a three day total of 215.
Rounding out the lineup for DU were sophomores Katie Kempter and Jessica Yam, who both tied for 10th place with a 2-over par total of 218.
With this win, the Pioneers have now won two straight tournaments to start off their season, while improving to number 12 in the national team rankings.
The Pioneers will try for a third consecutive tournament victory as they play in the Heater Farr Memorial at Omni Interlocken Resort in Broomfield today.
