The DU men’s soccer team defeated San Jose State for the second time in eight days and finished out the weekend with a grueling tie against Sacramento State.
Freshman forwards Miles Marmo, Kellan Christensen and senior midfielder Ben Mendozza all scored goals in the Pioneers’ 3-0 victory over San Jose State. Mendozza and senior midfielder James Merriman each contributed an assist.
Junior goalkeeper Matt Bredehoft notched his sixth shutout of the season.
Junior defender Josh Fallin earned other honors and was named last week’s the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s Player of the Week.
The Pioneers also scraped out a 1-1 tie in a heated double overtime match against Sacramento State Sunday.
Sacramento drew first blood, scoring in the 11th minute. This marked the first time the men’s soccer team had ever trailed in the last seven games.
As the Pioneers battled to even the score, the atmosphere grew ugly. Missing a center official, the two referees began to lose control of the game. In the first half alone, two Sacramento players were given yellow cards for rough play.
“A third ref was not there. That is a big problem with organization,” said DU Head Coach Chad Ashton.
Freshman midfielder Collin Audley was also given a yellow card in the 69th minute. In the 78th minute, referees dished out red cards to a Sacramento State forward as well as DU senior defenders Ismael Echeverria and Eric Ortiz. With these three players ejected from the match, DU could field only nine players against Sacramento State’s 10.
But three minutes later, a Sacramento midfielder was also handed a red card, evening the squads at nine a side.
Despite being shorthanded, the Pioneers increased their offensive pressure, outshooting Sacramento State 9-3 in the second half.
Finally, with only 52 seconds remaining in regulation, DU sophomore defender Colin Jones laid a crossing pass in front of junior forward Greg Fiddick, who shot the ball into the upper right corner, evening the score at 1 apiece. The game then continued into overtime.
The penalties continued in overtime play. A Sacramento State defender and DU’s Jones both received yellow cards in the first overtime.
Although the Pioneers outshot Sacramento 7-0 in overtime, DU could not find the back of the net, and the score ended in a tie.
The men’s soccer team is clearly focused on the remaining games, said Ashton. “Right now we’re in a good spot to win the conference, so every game is big.”
The Pioneers next face Air Force on Saturday, October 28th at 11 a.m. at Pioneer Field.
