The Pioneers began their fall schedule impressively as they cruised to a 16 shot victory at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Oregon last Tuesday.

DU was led by freshman Stephanie Sherlock, who won the individual medalist honors in her first tournament as a Pioneer. Sherlock, the only player in the field to finish the tournament under par, shot a three day total of two under par 214.

Holding a 10 shot lead heading into the final round, the Pioneers shot the low team score of the day, a 4-over par 292, to thwart off a charge from second place University of California-Davis for the win.

The Pioneers received strong play from all five starters, as four of them finished in the top 15 and all finished in the top 30 individually.

Sophomore Katie Kempter used a final round hole-in-one on the par three 13th hole to help her to her second-best finish in her DU career with a tie for sixth at 3-over par.

Following Kempter was fellow sophomore Jessica Yam who finished a career-best 11th at 7-over par.

Nationally ranked Pioneer Emily Hoeper opened her senior season with a tie for 14th after finishing at 8-over par 224. Hoeper, DU’s record holder for career wins and scoring average, was named to Golfworld’s top 50 players to watch for this season.

Rounding out the DU lineup, sophomore Dawn Shockley finished at a respectable tie for 29th.

The Pioneers are in action today as they host the Ron Moore Intercollegiate at Highlands Ranch Golf Club.
