The Pioneers men’s soccer team split a pair of home games this past weekend. The Pioneers defeated Alabama A&M 1-0 on Friday in their home opener at Pioneer Field.

The Pioneers were unable to maintain the home field momentum, however, losing two days later to no. 25 Memphis 2-1.

In Friday’s game, DU was able to hold onto a 1-0 lead built off of a first half goal by freshman Collin Audley, his second goal of the season. Audley headed sophomore Joey Mathot’s free kick for the score and ultimately the win.

Denver goalie Junior Matt Bredehoft completed the shutout, saving all four shots on goal. Although Denver’s lone goal came in the first half, their offense really didn’t pick up until the second half.

The Pioneers increased their shot production from four shots in the first half to 14 in the second, six of which were on goal but saved by Alabama keeper Paul Musoke.

While Denver did come away with the win, the Pioneers had 11 more fouls than Alabama, 23 for the game. DU also outshot Alabama 18 to 9.

Sunday’s game saw the Pioneers’ record slip to 4-3-1 while the Memphis Tigers improved to 7-1-0 with a final score of 2-1. The Pioneers trailed at the half 1-0, despite out shooting the Tigers 6-1.

The Tigers took full advantage of their only shot of the first half, as it made its way past Denver goalie Matt Bredehoft for the first goal of the game. Memphis scored again to open the second half, leading Denver by two, a deficit the Pioneers could not overcome.

DU’s lone goal came 15 minutes into the half scored by freshman Kellen Christensen, his first of the year, with an assist by Joey Mathot. The Tigers goals were their only two shots on goal, leaving an impression of sheer efficiency.

The Pioneers have played opponents evenly all season, having scored nine goals this season while allowing their opponents to score nine as well.

Freshman Collin Audley is the Pioneers’ leading scorer with two goals while sophomore Joey Mathot leads the team in assists with four. Other Pioneers to record goals this season are Jacob Chase, Kellen Christensen, Colby Pearce, Collin Jones, Miles Marmo, James Merriman and Ben Mendozza who also has an assist.

The Pioneers have used two goalies this season, freshman Joe Willis and junior Matt Bredehoft. Willis has started three games, recording a win, a loss and a tie. He has allowed two goals and made seven saves.

Bredehoft has started five games recording three wins and two losses. He has made 16 saves and allowed seven goals.

The Pioneers will open Sun Belt Conference play at home this Friday when they take on the New Mexico Lobos at 4 p.m.

Their current home stand will come to a close on Sunday when they continue SBC play against UNLV.
