“Be the Change” Week

Each day this week, many DU groups will unite in sponsoring “Be the Change” week, with assorted activities and freebies on each day. Today is Diversity Day, featuring activities of cross-dressing, making your own buttons, collages, bead bracelets, silhouettes on the week. Tomorrow is Women’s Rights Day, with activities of “take back the wifebeater” and female icons pictures. Thursday is Social Justice Day with activities including a representation of deaths in Iraq, petitions, “What would Bush say?”, silk screen your own T-shirt and many mini teach-ins with FreeSkool.

Each day features a spin-a-wheel and answer-a-question activity, and all activities will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Campus Green. In addition, the movie “Crash” will show at 8 p.m. in Davis Auditorium tonight and a panel, “Future of Reproductive Rights in Colorado,” will be in Lindsay Auditorium at 7 p.m. tomorrow, both events featuring with free Fuhgidabowdit’s pizza.

Science symposium

Today in the Olin Rotunda from 2 to 4 p.m. will be “Preserving the Best of the Past, Creating a Better Future,” a symposium celebrating the scientific, academic and public service career of Chancellor Emeritus Chester M. Alter. Presenters and presentations include: Chancellor Emeritus Dwight Smith, Professor Emeritus Bernie Spilka, Professor Gareth R. Eaton and Professor David Christophel, director of the Chester M. PeaceJam benefit

Tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Davis Auditorium will be the PeaceJam Foundation benefit featuring Shirin Ebadi. Ebadi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003 for her lifetime commitment to working for women’s and children’s rights in Iran and throughout the world. Advance tickets are $18 or $16 with a student ID. School of Art exhibit

Starting tomorrow, the School of Art and Art History is will present the annual exhibition of work by graduating seniors from the school’s programs in studio art and electronic media and design in “(in)formal : BFA Exhibition,” running until June 10. Featured artists include: Kara Cochran, Robbie Lee Deel, Amanda Lenz, Stefani Pahler, Joey Piccola, Naomi Scheck, Alexis Siler, Ashley Tucker and Joshua Van Engen. The Shwayder Art Building where the exhibit is on display, is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and weekends 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Call (303) 871-2846 with any questions.

Albright booksigning

On Thursday at noon at the Hyatt Regency, 7800 East Tufts Ave., Denver, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will speak about her latest book, “The Mighty and The Almighty: Relections on America, God and World Affairs.” Albright will sign copies of her book after the lecture. The cost for the luncheon event is $35 for DU students and members of the Religious Leadership Council; $50 for guests. Film and Culture series

On Friday, the International Students Study Abroad will put on the film and culture series, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on the first floor of the International House. Shot in Kenya, Germany, Sudan, Manitoba and London, the film “The Constant Gardener” is an mix of political intrigue, action adventure, and love story. Ralph Fiennes stars as Justin Quayle, a low-level British diplomat who has always gone about his work without causing problems. But after his radical wife is killed, he becomes determined to find out why, and thrusts himself into the middle of a very dangerous conspiracy. The event is free and ethnic snacks and drinks will be served. Everyone interested in international film and culture is encouraged to attend. “One Flea Spare”

Opening on Thursday in the Elizabeth Erickson Byron Flexible Theatre within the Newman Center, the DU department of theatre presents “One Flea Spare,” running May 18, 19, 20, 26, 27 at 8 p.m. and May 27 and 28 at 2 p.m. The show is about a detached wealthy couple, a mutinous sailor and a mysterious young girl, who find themselves quarantined in a house as London is ravaged by the plague of 1665. In this crucible of confinement, marital, social and personal relationships are strained, broken and refashioned as each character struggles against the imminent threat of death – and each other. Tickets are free to the University Community the first weekend of the run. Bring your DU ID to the box office for tickets. Student Media elections

Students interested in managing University of Denver’s student media should submit applications no later than Thursday.

The election is scheduled for noon Friday at the Student Media Board meeting in Village Commons.

Applications for editor in chief of the Clarion, editor of Foothills and manager of KVDU and DUTV are available in the Student Life office on the top floor of Driscoll North. Applications can also be obtained by contacting SMB chair Jacob Rokeach at Jrokeach@msn.com.

In the spring of every year student publications are required to hold elections of student editors and managers. DU’s student media is supported by 10 percent of the student activity fee.

The editor of the Clarion is in charge of putting out the weekly student newspaper, both in print and online. The editor of Foothills supervises the annual publication of Foothills literary magazine which is distributed to students each May. The manager of KVDU oversees the DU Internet radio station. The manager of DUTV cooperates with the Department of Housing in providing content for the on-campus community television station.
