The Denver Pioneer Women’s Lacrosse team spent the weekend in Eugene, Ore. where they faced the Oregon Ducks Friday and the Stony Brook Seawolves Sunday. DU defeated both the Ducks and Seawolves, 14-13 and the team is off to their best start in program history.
With the wins, DU extended its winning streak to nine games and has a season record of 11-2 and a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) record of 4-0.
“The wins this weeked were huge. It showed us that we are not unbeateable and it was a reality check, that we need to work hard every game,” said junior captain Kristie Leggio.
Friday, the Pioneers beat their MPSF foe, Oregon 14-13 in a game that went down to the wire. With 17 seconds remaining in the second half sophomore Becky Childs made the game winning save to give the Pioneers their eighth win in a row. Childs had ten saves against the Ducks while junior Kristie Leggio contributed five goals and three assists for the Pioneers. Also scoring for Denver was freshman Karen Morton, who put five in the net, freshman Steph Coyne, who recorded two goals and an assist, and senior Stephanie Greenlees, who had one goal and two assists.
Greenlees was just getting warmed up Friday night. On Sunday she added seven goals, three of which helped Denver jump out to an early 7-1 lead, and two more in the first half that helped Denver sustain an 11-5 lead at the break.
Denver kept the lead for the rest of the game even though the Seawolves closed the gap to just two with 14:25 left in the game. With just 14 seconds left in the game the Seawolves came within one but they weren’t able to get another shot off giving Denver their ninth win in a row. Leggio contributed five assists and one goal along with three ground balls. Morton also added three goals and an assist giving her ten goals on the weekend. DU goalie Becky Childs had 7 saves and allowed thirteen to get past her.
The Pioneers will return to Peter Barton Stadium April 11 where they will take on C.W. Post and Regis in a double header at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively.
Denver will play one of its biggest games of the season this Saturday when they host league foe Stanford at 1 p.m., make sure to come cheer on your lady Pioneers.
“Stanford is a really big game. That is a team that we have never beat, so it will test our potential,” said Leggio.
