This past weekend the University of Denver Recreation Department may have started a new tradition. The University of Denver Recreation Department hosted a flag football tournament to make up for the lack of an intramural flag football season. The tournament lasted three days and was double elimination. Sixteen teams signed up to play in the tournament, but only 14 were able to play throughout the weekend. This tournament was the biggest event to take place in the recently finished Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The new turf was a draw for many of the teams. Brad Logar, director of intramural sports, stated that “the tournament was pretty successful for our first attempt. If we change anything we will change the season, since fall is traditionally football season.”Seven of the nine fraternities had teams as well as four teams that were from the Sturm Law School. The champions, Law One, went through the tournament undefeated and faced its toughest opposition in the first round. Team captain Eric Thompson said that his team’s victory was “the happiest day of my life except the birth of my baby next month.” That type of enthusiasm was evident in several teams that could have played up to five games on Sunday to make it to the championship game. The runner up was the SAE fraternity team. The team indicated that the schedule was grueling but that the tournament was a fun alternative to a whole season. One of the major problems that seemed to exist were scheduling conflicts with varsity lacrosse practices, and the homecoming week/parents’ weekend activities that were going on simultaneously. Logar indicated that “there were very few forfeits and that was surprising with everything that was going on this weekend.” The captain of Law One agreed with Logar, stating that “the tournament was run very smoothly, and it was fun for everybody involved to just play football.” After watching several of the games this weekend, it seems that the secret to success is a strong armed quarterback that can run like Michael Vick and receivers that can catch like Randy Moss or Terrell Owens without the attitude. Other than that, it seems like even those teams that did not play as well as they would have liked to had fun with just a weekend of football.
