The Colorado Avalanche entered the NHL playoffs looking like the team to beat, and through the first two rounds they proved exactly why many fans believed they could make another deep playoff run this season.
Colorado played fast, physical and confident hockey to reach the Western Conference Final, but now face their toughest challenge yet against the Vegas Golden Knights.
The Avalanche opened their post-season run in dominant fashion against the Los Angeles Kings. Colorado completely controlled the series and swept Los Angeles in four straight games. The team looked nearly unstoppable with their explosive offense and disciplined defense. Every line contributed and the Avalanche quickly demonstrated they were strong Stanley Cup contenders.
After the sweep, Colorado moved on to the second round against the Minnesota Wild. The Avalanche continued their strong play early in the series, winning the first two games and taking control right away.
Minnesota answered back with a win in Game 3, giving the Wild momentum and making the series more competitive.
However, Colorado responded and won Games 4 and 5 to close out the series and advance to the Western Conference Final.
One of the biggest reasons for Colorado’s playoff success had been star center Nathan MacKinnon. MacKinnon has been one of the best players in the playoffs so far, leading the Avalanche offense with seven goals and 14 total points in 11 games. His speed, playmaking ability and scoring have made him nearly unstoppable. Whenever Colorado needs a big play, MacKinnon usually delivers.
Forward Martin Necas has also played a major role during the post season, recording 10 assists and 11 total points through the first 11 games. Meanwhile, Captain Gabriel Landeskog had provided leadership and physical play while adding nine points of his own. Defenseman Devon Toews has also stepped up with strong defensive performances and offensively with nine points.
Now, the Avalanche face a difficult situation in the Western Conference Final against Vegas. The Golden Knights have taken a commanding 3-0 series lead, putting the Avalanche one loss away from seeing their season come to an end.
Vegas has done a strong job slowing down Colorado’s offense and taking advantage of scoring chances. The Avalanche will now need to respond quickly if they want to keep their Stanley Cup hopes alive.
Although Colorado is trailing in the series, the playoffs have already revealed this team is capable of bouncing back from adversity. With playoff experience, talented players and one of the league’s most dangerous offenses, the Avalanche still believe they can fight their way back into the series.
Down 3-0 in the series, the Avalanche will look to stay alive in Game 4 against the Golden Knights on May 26.
