The victory served as revenge from 2025, when the Broncos defeated the Crimson and Gold 3-2 in double overtime in the Frozen Four semifinal.

Emptying the bench, the Denver hockey team rushed to senior captain Kent Anderson after he scored the game winning goal in double overtime to send the Crimson and Gold to the national championship. Denver, who was losing 3-2 in the third period, sent the game to overtime with a goal from Clarke Caswell with 2:46 left in regulation.

Both teams playing in the game were coming off upsets in the semifinals, where No. 3 Wisconsin upset No. 2 North Dakota by a score of 2-1, and No. 4 Denver upset No. 1 Michigan by a score of 4-3.

Lorenz’s third period equalizer came on the heels of a lack-luster early game performance, where Denver only recorded five shots on net through two periods.
