The AUSA Senate heard from men’s basketball Head Coach Terry Carroll to update the Senate on the progress of the team and called for a greater student showing at home games. He gave an update on the team’s status and new players, and stressed that although in the past year the team was very successful, he would like to continue to see improvement on the court. However, according to Carroll, the most important factor in the basketball team’s improvement and success this year is student involvement in the team and a real student presence at home games. “Last year, students were really starting to show a more collegiate Division 1 environment at home games,” Carroll said.He continued, saying that he would like to see this environment intensify this season. “Let’s build the fan base to create a support system that will make DU Pioneer men’s basketball team 14-0 at home.”There is a large drive this year by many in the athletic department to increase student involvement in athletics on campus. The three Intercollegiate Athletic Chairs are working in conjunction with the Senate to get the word out about athletic events on campus. In addition, the Crimson and Gold Committee, founded by DUPB, was created to promote school wide spirit. Their first sponsored event was this past weekend’s tailgating party before the hockey game last Friday. Also present at the meeting was Megan Cartier from the Pioneer Leadership Program to discuss her and three other PLP members’ project to create a Diversity Week in spring quarter. The week will be centered on creative means for the campus to embrace diversity, such as a tunnel of oppression that students can navigate through. This week will also hopefully make diversity training mandatory for all Campus Safety and faculty members. In addition, all of the Senators will be attending diversity training sometime in late January. The next, and second to last, Senate meeting is Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 6 p.m.
