It was a warm afternoon, with a slight breeze and not a cloud in the sky on Friday as the Pioneers played their second to last home game against the Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans. Almost 200 fans showed up to watch as the Pioneers dominated the game from start to finish winning 5-0.Denver jumped to an early lead with a goal by Jessica Keller 9:36 into the game. The Pioneers offense did not slow down either. By the end of the first half, the score was 3-0 with goals from two freshmen, Emily Hines and Sarah Martinez, late in the half. The offense onslaught continued into the second half. Jenna Billingsley got the Pioneers off to another early start by scoring a minute and 22 seconds into the half. The Pioneers recorded another goal at 68:30 scored by Katie Oates. Coach Jeff Hooker wanted to “keep everyone involved” and that included the Pioneer bench. The Pioneers substituted often and it proved to be fruitful. Both Hines and Martinez scored from off the bench and Carlynn McCallum contributed an assist. Freshman Katie Oates, who scored the last goal of the game, felt positive about the game saying, “We played hard all 90 minutes. Good habits.”The Pioneers outplayed the Trojans from start to finish, never letting up. Even with a three-goal advantage going into the second half, the Pioneers recorded more shots on goal in the second half than in the first. The game was played almost entirely on the Trojans’ side of the field. Denver’s offense continually pushed toward the net, recording 21 shots on goal, 12 of which came in the second half indicating the effort put forth by the Pioneers. The Trojans recorded only a single shot on goal for the entire game. Freshman Jessica Keller, who had the winning goal and one assist, was nothing but smiles after the game simply saying, “It went well,” which seemed to be the general consensus of the team. Hooker’s thoughts on the game were positive. “We played very well. We wanted to avoid bad habits and keep everyone involved. We did a good job of that,” he said. Hooker was also pleased with his team maintaining the shutout after the first half. A score of 5-0 is a good habit to get into especially since the Pioneers played solidly in their exploitation of the Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans. The weekend proved to be bittersweet, however, with a loss to Arkansas State 2-0 Sunday. The Pioneers were not short of offensive effort while out shooting their opponents 18 shots to 3. However, none of those shots found the back of the net. Going 1-1 this weekend, the Pioneers will hit the road for their final three games of the season with a record of 7-6-2 and conference record of 4-1-1.As of right now Denver is second overall in the Sun Belt Conference and will face first-place North Texas this Friday in Denton, Texas. The final two games of the season will be Oct. 28 at Middle Tennesse and Oct. 30 at Western Kentucky. After the regular season will be a conference tourney and the winner will adance to the NCAA’s.
