Pioneer partnersInterested in helping kids learn reading and math? Flu shotsOn Wednesday Oct. 12, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. the DU Student Health and Counseling Center will be offering influenza vaccines at the Student Health and Counseling Center located on the 3rd floor, north entrance of the Ritchie Center. At this time we will only be offering them to DU faculty, staff, students, and their spouses/partners who meet the following high risk criteria: adults 65 years of age or older and persons 18-64 years with underlying chronic medical conditions such as: asthma, other chronic lung disease, diabetes, or compromised immunity. Also women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during the flu season, and health care workers with direct patient contact.The cost of the vaccine will be $15 in the form of cash, check, or credit card.We hope to offer the influenza vaccine to the entire DU population in the near future. Dodgeball tournamentOn Friday Oct. 14, from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Recreation for the Ritchie Center, the Student Health and Counseling Center and HRE have teamed up to bring you a free Dodgeball Tournament at Gates Field House, located in the Ritchie Center. Deadline for sign-up is Oct. 12.There will be a best “themed” team contest. There must be at least 6 players on a team with no restrictions on team composition. Katrina 5k benefitOn Oct. 16 the Art of Living Organization will be holding a 5k run/walk for Katrina Relief benefit. It will be held at Denver City Park located at 23rd and York St. It begins at 8:30 a.m. Registration costs are $15 before Oct. 20 for individuals and $20 on race day. Under 12 and over 60 are free; students with a valid ID will be $12 before race day and $15 on race day. Groups of 10 or more will be $10 a person. Holocaust awareness On Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 7-9 p.m. in Lindsay Auditorium, the Holocaust Awareness Institute of the Center for Judaic Studies will present “Creating a Constituency of Conscience: The Role of Holocaust Remembrance in Combating Contemporary Genocide.”The featured speaker and presenter will be Jerry Fowler, staff director of the committee on conscience at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. The committee’s mandate is to alert the national conscience, influence policymakers and stimultate worldwide action to confront and work to halt acts of genocide or related crimes against humanity.In July 2004, the committee issued a “Genocide Emergency” for Darfur, the first time in history that it used this highest level of alert.For more information, contact Amy Berkowitz Caplan at aberkow3@du.edu or RSVP to 303.871.3018. “Mighty times”On Sunday Oct. 16, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Davis Auditorium in Sturm Hall, come and watch the movie “Mighty Times: The Rosa Parks Story” and participate in a small group dialogue after the showing. Issues discussed will be the Montgomery Bus Boycotts, the Civil Rights Movement, activism now and then and much more. Homecoming weekHomecoming week at DU will start Thursday, Nov. 3, with the Homecoming Carnival from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., with a whole day of music, food, activities and prizes at Sideline’s Pub. The night consists of the Homecoming Formal located at the Warwick Hotel. The dance starts at 9 p.m. and will go until 12 a.m. Buses leave from Warren Circle. Tickets are $5 and T-shirts will be sold for $7.Homecoming week continues Nov. 4 and 5 with parents weekend. Students and parents are invited to enjoy college sessions, reunions, receptions and the Homecoming Hockey Game against Michigan Tech. On Nov. 4 before the hockey game the Homecoming tailgate party will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. where students can gather and enjoy music, food and free giveaways.
