It’s never too early to start planning for the future. At the Center for Academic and Career Development, located under the bookstore in Driscoll, students are encouraged to meet with an advisor as early as freshman year. “The one thing we always recommend to students is to come sooner,” advised John Haag, career counselor. Individual departments typically offer career counseling and job placement assistance, however the Career Center provides many general resources. Students can receive help with creating resumes, registering for on campus recruiting events and finding an alumni or professional to shadow. While seniors are traditionally the most concerned about finding jobs, anxiety is high universitywide. The unstable economy and developing technologies combined make for an unpredictable job market. “From experience, not backed by statistics, Accounting, Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management and Real Estate Construction Management students probably have the highest or quickest employment rate,” said Mary Michael Hawkins, Career Center director. “Engineering and Computer Science majors probably rank up there as well.”According to an exit survey conducted by the Career Center, 73 percent of graduates were employed within three months or less of graduation. “This is the results of the follow up survey we gather at caps and gowns and then follow up twice throughout the year,” said Hawkins. One hundred and ninety seven students responded to the survey, which represents 28 percent of the university’s 2004 bachelor’s degree candidates. Of the respondents, 99.3 percent that were searching for a job were employed within 12 months. The average salary of those employed was between $20,000 and $40,000. Companies where graduates are employed include Xcel Energy, FOX Sports, and General Electric.Colorado and California ranked among the top states that graduates were employed in. Of those surveyed, 20.3 percent decided to pursue further programs of study. The most popular topic of study is business followed by law. Students interested in career advising will have an easier time making appointments during fall quarter, as January through July tends to be the busiest time.
