The Sigma Chi fraternity hosted the first Powder-Puff football game last Saturday with proceeds going directly to the Children’s Miracle Network and the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Sigma Chi is aiming to make the game an annual event taking place during the fall term. All women on campus were encouraged to come out and play, and those who chose to participate paid a $75 signup fee per team. The event took place at Observatory Park with 13 teams taking part in the action.Powder-Puff football is a seven-on-seven flag football game with a 50-yard field and a 30-minute clock. Many of the teams sported their own uniforms created by team members who showed their own unique team spirit. The two teams that made it to the finals were from Delta Gamma and Gamma Phi Beta, with Delta Gamma eventually coming out on top with a 21-7 victory. Next year Sigma Chi is looking to make some changes. These may include teams of male cheerleaders. It will offer more food and music, coaching prior to the tournament and an award for the most spirited team. This year the event raised over $1,000 which Sigma Chi hopes to increase in the future. Clint Emmerich, a junior and member of the Sigma Chi, acted as a referee and was happy with the first-year turnout.”Sigma Chi enjoys hosting events such as these because it is fun to see students enjoying themselves and it gives us a chance to exemplify the values our Brotherhood upholds,” said Emmerich. In the end, the women who took part in the event put on quite a show for those who attended. Although some players left with minor bruises the event was ultimately a success, they said.
