The Delta Gamma sorority and the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity will host their spring philanthropies on consecutive weeks starting April 30.
Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash will take place at the El Pomar Natorium in the Ritchie Center from 3-5 p.m. April 30.
Anchor Splash will feature 13 teams mostly made up of fraternities, sororities and various other organizations on campus competing in relays and synchronized swimming. Each of the teams will be coached by a Delta Gamma sorority members. Teams will also compete in a “Most Creative Swim Attire” contest to be judged by Delta Gamma juniors and seniors as well as their house mother.
Anchor Splash is part of Delta Gamma’s Random Acts of Kindness Week, which also includes the “Most Beautiful Eyes Competition.”
Students will be able to put money in jars bearing pictures of only the eyes of various participants in Anchor Splash. The amount and type of currency each team’s jar collects can positively or negatively affect team’s point standing going into the competition.
Delta Gamma is also organizing “Air Band,” a lip synching concert to be held at 7 p.m., following Anchor Splash. It will also feature the participants of Anchor Splash.
Admission to both Anchor Splash and Air Band is free.
Students will also have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets and win prizes at the events. Tickets will be available for purchase beginning the week of April 25.
Proceeds from Anchor Splash and Air Band will benefit the Anchor Center of Denver for children with sight disabilities. Last year’s main event, Anchor Slide, made $3,000. Anchor Splash organizer, Becca Burns, is hoping to increase that amount to $4,000 or $5,000 this year.
“I’m really excited for Anchor Splash. I hope everyone checks it out,” said Burns. “It’s for a great cause.”
Lambda will weigh in a week later with the second-annual Wiffle Ball Bash on Driscoll Lawn May 7 from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Teams comprised of the Greek community, as well as of other organizations on campus, will participate in a wiffle ball competition. Students, staff and community members also have the opportunity to form four-person teams for an entrance fee of $20.
Attendance at the bash is free and will feature free food and music. Popular local DU band Kinetix is also scheduled to play.
Raffle tickets for the event will also be available for purchase. Prizes will include Colorado Rockies tickets and a grand prize of $200, among others.
“We intend to involve the entire campus community in a fun day of competition as well as doing something for a cause and making students aware of the issues of hunger and national poverty,” said Yann Benjamin, member of Lambda and coordinator of the event.
All proceeds from the bash will go to the North American Food Drive. Each dollar Lambda collects will equal 10 pounds of food for people in need. The goal this spring is to be able to provide the charity with five tons of food.
The fraternity has been working hard to make the Wiffle Ball Bash come together, and is hoping for a strong turnout.
“We’ve put in so many man hours and ask for the involvement of not only the campus community, but also the local community to aid us in the effort,” Benjamin said.
