After a disappointing home upset loss at the hands of No. 22 Kentucky two weeks ago, the University of Denver Pioneer gymnastics team rebounded by notching its 14th win of the season this past week.
The Pioneers, now ranked No.18 in the nation, closed out their regular season with a 14-7 record with their road win over the Boise State Broncos last Monday.
The team’s 195.675 -194.400 win over the Broncos is credited to a team effort with strong performances from freshman Sasha Sullivan and sophomore Casey Dobyns.
Sullivan recorded a team leading seventh individual title in the floor exercise with a score of 9.85 and was instrumental in the final regular season victory.
For the 10th time in 13 competitions, Sullivan finished on top for the Pioneers.
Dobyns also played a major role in the Pioneers win with a 9.80 on the uneven bars.
It was her second highest score of the season in the event.
Sophomore Katie Andrews finished second on the uneven bars with a score of 9.775.
This was her first ever win in the uneven bars portion of the competition.
Dobyns also compliled a 9.9 on the vault, earning the sixth vault title of the season for her.
This was Dobyns’ 10th score of 9.9 or better this season and it helped to propel the Pioneers to their winning season.
Freshman Courtney Butler posted a 9.8 on the vault, good enough for a three-way tie for fifth place.
The women are now playing the waiting game for their rank and the location of their NCAA regionals, both of which will be announced on April 3.
The six regionals are scheduled for April 9.B
By finishing in the top two in regionals, DU would receive its first NCAA tournament bid in three years.
Sophomore Heather Huffaker, who was also key in the Pioneers win at Boise State, spoke of the team’s hard work and overall efforts to make it back to the NCAA’s.
“Everyone wants to go to the tournament this year,” said Huffaker.
Huffaker feels that the team’s ability to work together has guided them to a successful finish.B
Huffaker added, “The chemistry is good and everyone is willing to do what they can to get there.”
The team is happy with its last meet of the season and is looking forward to regionals.
Until then, the team will be working overtime in the gym to accomplish its goal.
“Our goal is to make it to Nationals first, then we can focus on what we need to do once we have gotten there,” said Huffaker.
