Students who haven’t had their MMR vaccination may have to fear more than just a shot.
They won’t be able to register for spring quarter.
Last Friday, the Student Health and Counseling Center started to place holds on registration for spring quarter on the accounts of some students who enrolled at DU in the fall quarter. The holds are placed due to non-compliance with the State of Colorado MMR vaccine requirement for university students.
According to Louise McDonald, director of university health and counseling, several hundred undergraduate and graduate students have not met the state requirement for proof of immunity against measles, mumps and rubella.
The health center has sent e-mails to students who have not complied with these rules and has offered vaccination clinics on campus. DU is offering the usual $45 vaccine free of charge to students who need it
The reasons for requiring these vaccinations is to “protect our students from these communicable diseases,” said McDonald.
“The law requires that we do not allow students to register if they have not met the requirement after being at the university for a certain period of time,” she explained.
Students that don’t have documentation of their MMR shots can either receive injections through the health center or download an immunization form at www.du.edu/duhealth/healthcenter/general/immunizations.html and get it signed by their physician and fax it to the health center at x14242.
The health center offers MMR clinics Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Appointments are not required.
