University of Denver women’s tennis team boosted it’s record to 17-1 after defeating Colorado State 6-1 on thursday at the Stapleton Tennis Pavilion.
The victory marks the end of the 2003-2004 season for the Pioneers, who extended their win streak to 14 games.
Jenny Trettin, Rachel Sackmaster, Barbara Kourim, Yanick Dullens and Suzana Maksovic each recorded singles wins.
In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Dullens and Maksovic won matches 8-6 while the No. 2 team comprised of Trettin and Kourim walked away with an 8-2 victory.
As a team, the Pioneers havedone well since their 7-0 win against Utah. Their only loss came to BYU back on Feb. 14.
More recently, Head Coach Dana Young has been impressed with the team’s play since the match against Montana.
All singles and doubles matches against Montana were led by the Pioneers, resulting in their 12th consecutive win and fourth consecutive shutout.
“The team really played well,” said Young. “We were able to rest a couple of starters in singles and the team really responded.”
Dullens, Kourim, Sackmaster, Beth Messaros, Stephanie Ginsburg and Crystal Knysh all won their singles matches.
Knysh and Ginsburg played in place of Trettin and Maksovic, and responded with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
The Pioneers swept the doubles category with doubles wins at the No. 1, No. 2 and No.3 positions.
The women’s winning streak continued as they beat Air Force 7-0 at the Stapleton Tennis Pavillion.
All nine singles and doubles matches were swept by Denver for their 13th consecutive win and fifth consecutive shutout.
“I’m really proud of how hard we fought today,” said Young after the match. “We came out, fought and competed hard, and I am pleased with our effort today.”
Dullens, Maksovic, Trettin, Kourim, Sackmaster and Messaros all won their singles matches. The Pioneers lost only 22 games in 12 sets, six of those games in one set.
Again the Pioneers breezed the doubles with victories at No. 1, Dullens and Maksovic, No. 2 Trettin and Kourim, and No. 3 Sackmaster and Mechem.
The Pioneers will take the court again April 22-24 at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Alabama.
