The 15th ranked University of Denver men’s lacrosse team hopes to continue to shut out its competition during its two-game road schedule against Delaware and Duke.
The Pioneers are currently 7-3 on the season after coming off a 7-6 win over the Air Force Academy.
With the victory over the Falcons, the Pioneers captured their second conference win.
Junior goalie Brian Sanders made 18 saves in the victory, which tied his career-high and sealed the win for the Pioneers.
Senior Jeff Biggs added a goal and an assist, while sophomores Greg Weigel and Geoff Snider each tallied two goals.
Sanders made three major saves before Air Force scored two times within the first four minutes of the game.
Weigel scored the first goal for the Pioneers at 8:23 and Snider tied the game at 2-2 off a feed from senior Jeff Biggs with only three minutes left in the first quarter.
Weigel scored his second goal of the game with 35 seconds remaining, giving Denver its first lead of the game heading into the second quarter.
Neither team scored again until the Falcons tied the score at three. Denver responded as Snider won the next faceoff and gave the Pioneers the lead seconds later.
Sophomore Greer Hanlon scored another goal, extending the Pioneers’ lead to two.
Biggs put in his first goal of the game with 1:07 left in the half, giving Denver a 6-3 lead heading into the second half.
The only player to score in the third quarter was Air Force’s William Keleher, whose goal cut Denver’s lead to two at the 12:27 mark. Keleher opened the fourth quarter with another goal, bringing the Falcons within one.
Two minutes later the Falcons scored a goal to tie the score for the third time. Sophomore Adam Miller tallied a man-down goal which gave Denver a 7-6 lead with 8:06 remaining.
The Falcons had a great opportunity to score late, but Sanders made a major save to secure Denver’s 7-6 victory.
Junior Scott Davidson leads the team in scoring with 24 points. He is also 78-for-126 on faceoffs and has accumulated a team-high 56 ground balls.
Weigel is second on the team in goals (15) and has scored at least one point in the last eight games.
Sanders sports an 8.0 goals against average and a .613 saves percentage.
The Pioneers end their two-game road schedule and season on May 5 in North Carolina against Duke.
