Sick of Donald Trump? Want to find a real-life mentor?
This month, alumni who have gained success out in the “real world” will come back to campus to dispense advice and share their expertise with future graduates. The alumni will be visiting during “Masters Week,” which will take place April 18 through the 20.
“Masters Week” was begun by the DU Alumni Association, the Office of the Chancellor and the Office of the Provost in 1996, to allow students and faculty a chance to connect with successful alumni. The goal of this program is to show students that a college education does, in fact, have an application in the world of careers.
The speakers this year include Betty Proctor, Peter Jones, Lloyd S. Lewan, and Kathleen A. Mahoney-Norris.
Betty Proctor recently retired from the Department of Human Services, where she began working in 1969. She is currently working at Helping Hearts and Hands, where she is the executive director. She has won several awards, including the City of Lakewood’s “Women Who Make a Difference” award. Proctor graduated from DU in 1974, with a master’s degree in social work.
Peter Jones, who works with ceramics and photography, teaches pottery workshops in addition to operating Mountain Street Pottery in Maine. He has won several ceramics awards from multiple states. Jones also runs Shot in the Dark Cave Photography. His photos have been featured in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., and the Department of Interior Museum. He is currently working on a cave photography book for the National Speleological Society in Camden, Maine. Jones graduated from DU in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
Lloyd S. Lewan recently retired as chairman of the board for Lewan and Associates, Inc., an office technology company. He is acting chairman of the board and senior academic advisor for the Institute for Shipboard Education, as well as the executive dean for the institute’s semester-at-sea program. He is author of the book Women in the Workplace – A Man’s Perspective. Lewan has an honorary degree from the DU College of Law, as well as a degree from Daniels College of Business, recieved in 1960.
Kathleen A. Mahoney-Norris works at the U.S. Air Force’s Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. There, she is the associate professor of National Security Studies and chair of the Department of International Security and Military Studies. Mahoney-Norris graduated from DU in 1996 with a Ph. D in international studies.
