The India Students Network at the University of Denver is organizing its first annual film festival from Jan. 22-25 at the International House, to commemorate India’s Republic Day celebrations on Jan. 26.

The film festival will showcase some of modern and popular Indian cinema’s milestones. All films shown are subtitled and are free of cost.

The following are the films that will be shown:

*Thursday, Jan 22nd: Satya (The truth): The gripping story of a young man who comes to Bombay (Mumbai), India’s financial capital, with dreams of a good life, but gets involved in organized crime. Starring: Manoj Bajpai, Chakravarthy and Urmila Matondkar (7pm-10pm). *Friday, Jan 23rd: Bombay: Set against the backdrop of Hindu-Muslim violence in the early 90s, this is the story of a Hindu man marrying a Muslim woman and the trials and tribulations they go through to make their family work in violence-ridden Bombay (now Mumbai) city among other social issues shown. Starring: Manisha Koirala and Arvind Swami (7pm-10pm).

*Saturday, Jan 24th: Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge: One of the most successful films ever made in India, this film is a classic boy-meets-girl tale, where the boy must battle against all social and family odds to win the girl of his dreams. A complete family entertainer. Starring: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amrish Puri (also seen in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) (7pm-10pm).

*Sunday, Jan 25th: Lagaan (Land tax): This film was nominated for an Oscar in 2002 and tells the story about a group of villagers who are pitted against an English captain in a game of cricket during the time of British rule over India. The villagers, who are farmers, must learn to play the game and beat the British to keep from paying unfair taxes. (2pm-6:30pm)
