University of Denver Programs Board’s school spirit day last Wednesday came and went with most students unaware that the day was any different.
Of 15 students asked, not one knew anything about school spirit day.
The idea behind school spirit day was for students to show school spirit, such as wearing DU clothing, and to win prizes throughout the day. But students said that they saw no exceptional displays of spirit.
Most students agree that DU lacks school spirit.
Vanessa Hernandez, a sophomore, said she thinks DU has very little school spirit. She added that most school spirit events include only sororities, fraternities and athletes.
A few students said that DU students do have school spirit. Most everyone liked the idea of a school spirit day since prizes went to those that showed school spirit and college students enjoy anything free.
“I like free,” said Shana Lovato, also a sophomore.
Most students agreed with Hernandez that there needs to be more of an effort to get students other than sororities, fraternities, and athletes involved in school spirit and school events.
As Hernandez concluded, DU needs to “get all types of students involved.”
The idea of a spirit day was discussed at a recent AUSA meeting.
The discussion included ways of involving more students in Homecoming and its related activities.
Last year, DUPB and the Department of Athletics joined forces to increase student attendance at DU events.
