Fat Jack’s has become the new phenomenon on the DU campus, and with good reason.
The little sub shop serves top of the line subs almost every hour of the day based on one simple premise: serve good food and customers will keep ordering.
Atmosphere: There are two locations of Fat Jack’s. One is very close to campus on Evans just past Colorado Boulevard. You cannot eat in the shop, but they have take out and delivery instead. However, the shop is very, very clean and organized and you are ensured a tasty sandwich.
Service and Staff: If you go to the shop, the ‘sub masters’ will make your sandwich right in front of you. There is usually no waiting involved. In fact, even delivery is quick. The owner stresses making each delivery in less than 30 minutes and they deliver anywhere. Just give a location and a phone number where you can be reached, and they will deliver to your location.
If you have a hankering for a late night snack in the library, just give Fat Jack’s a call. They are open until 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, but Thursday through Saturday, they are open until 3 a.m. That includes delivery.
Expect hours to be changing. The shop has had so much success with late hours that they are planning to be open and delivering seven days a week until three.
The great thing about this little sub shop is the friendly staff. The employees prepare everything. They bake the bread and cookies, make the sandwiches, answer the phones, and make deliveries. The happy employees are just a bunch of laid-back guys who will chew the fat with you every time you come in.
The Food: Fat Jack’s has quality meats and cheeses that they pile high atop freshly baked bread. You can add all the vegetables you want including fresh sprouts, avocado and red onions.
Don’t expect a hoagie roll that was baked five hours ago-the guys bake the bread as needed so you will always have it fresh. Fat Jack’s does have wheat bread you can order instead of a hoagie, but it isn’t fresh baked. I suggest sticking with the hoagie; you won’t be disappointed.
The sub shop even has jumbo cookies that are baked fresh. The sweet and soft dough is worth every penny.
Fat Jack’s sells quality beverages too. In addition to coke products, the shop sells Nantucket Nectars and Jones’ Sodas. Try the Jones’ Grape Soda. It’s the best.
What to Order: Fat Jack’s has a wide variety of sub choices, ranging from vegetarian to meat.
I fell in love with The Don, their double Italian sub that has double Genoa salami, Cappacola ham, and Provolone cheese. The toppings on the sub are not overpowering, which in this case is a good thing. You get to taste the quality of the meats and the fresh bread.
If you are not in the mood for that much meat, order a roast beef. The Johnny Roast Beef is the owner’s favorite, and it is delectable. The beef is great.
But if that is even too much meat for you, get The Jack Rabbit. This one is all vegetables and is just as satisfying as all the others. Get it with mayo, mustard, salt and pepper. You won’t regret it.
