The University of Denver women’s golf team ended it’s season with a tie for 16th place at the NCAA Regional Championships on May 10.

Head Coach Sammie Chergo was pleased with the team’s finish at the west regional tournament.

“We didn’t play our best the first and second rounds, but it was nice to see the team come together the last round to finish the season and the tournament on a good note,” said Chergo.

Junior Kate Waggoner finished the tournament with the Pioneer’s top score shooting a 12-over par 230, and ending the tournament with the Pioneer’s best round of the tournament shooting 2-over par 74.

The NCAA Regional tournament wrapped up a successful season for the Denver team.

The Pioneers won two team tournaments this season and finished second in the Sun Belt Conference tournament.

Chergo said, “This is the strongest team we have ever had at DU.”

She attributed much of the team’s success this season to the team chemistry.

“It was really a team effort, at different times, different people stepped up,” she said. “This group of student-athletes are really committed, they rallied off each other.”

The team will lose two seniors for next season, Christine Anast and Kelly Schaub. However, Chergo is confident about next season.

Joining the team next year will be Alyssa Otero, from Santa Fe, N. M. and Emily Hoeper, from Kansas City.

“They are two of our strongest recruits, both have had a lot of National Junior Golf experience,” Chergo said.

“The two new recruits, combined with the ones we have coming back, I expect lots of success, and to keep moving forward with the program,” Chergo said.
