Mustard’s Last Stand has been in the DU neighborhood for 25 years and has developed an excellent reputation for good food. The name is a play on the famous Custer’s Last Stand, the Battle of Little Big Horn where General Custer was killed.
When you visit Mustard’s you are likely to see a lot of locals, students and even some sports celebrities; John Elway, Joe Sakic and Rob Blake included. Mustard’s has great food, staff and atmosphere and is the perfect tribute to Chicago-style hotdogs.
Atmosphere: The Mustard’s atmosphere is so laid back you can feel comfortable right away. The restaurant has many hotdog related pictures on the walls. What is really cool about Mustard’s is that it has pictures of real hotdog stands around the country.
In fact, if you bring in a picture of a hotdog stand, you will get a free dog. But, not to worry, if you aren’t into the atmosphere inside, you can sit outside at the picnic tables and watch all the action on University.
Service and Staff: Service here is really quick, even when it gets busy. The staff knows how to handle these things. Actually, the staff is probably my favorite thing about the restaurant. They are in such a good mood all the time and will cheer you up if you are feeling down. They are really friendly and helpful. I think the staff’s attitudes make the place.
The Food: Mustard’s is not a chain. There is another one in Boulder that is owned by the same man from Chicago. All of his ingredients, down to the pickles and condiments are ordered from Chicago suppliers. The restaurant uses Vienna Beef hotdogs, high quality hotdogs.
But this hotdog stand has more to offer than just hotdogs. There are great burgers, Italian beef sandwiches, specialty sandwiches, and even vegetarian options.
I like the hotdogs the best, but Rebecca, a worker there, recommends the tuna and the Italian beef. The burgers are pretty good. The bun is toasted and the patties are thin. The meat is flavorful, but I’ve had better.
The chilidogs are worth a shot, too. What is unique about these chilidogs is that it has big chunks of chili ingredients and is not soup based like most chili.
What to Order: Make sure you try the hotdogs. They might not be my absolute favorite, but they are really authentic Chicago dogs (I’ve checked with many Chicago natives on this one).
And, whatever you do, don’t order anything plain. Try all of their suggested toppings. Toppings and fixings are the key to these hotdogs and hamburgers.
Definitely get the french fries. They are hand made and they are really good. I suggest trying them with the cheese dip.
Bring cash or a check, as Mustard’s doesn’t take credit cards. Senior citizens get an extra discount. Either way, the prices are probably the cheapest near campus.
