You’ve probably seen it on your way to the Daniels College of Business. Star Market Catering and Delicatessen, located at 2357 E. Evans right next to DonQ’s. But have you actually been in? Well, many students haven’t and I am telling you, you are missing out on great food.
I sat down with owner Michael Schettler, a DU Hotel Restaurant and Tourism Management graduate. Before Schettler bought Star Market 14 years ago, it was actually a convenience store. Now, it is a restaurant and catering company.
Most of Star Market’s business comes from catering. Schettler has even catered for the Rockies. The restaurant does get a lot of walk-in business, as well. You might run into your classmates or even your professor.
Atmosphere: The Star Market has a great, laidback atmosphere. The walls are decorated with street signs, posters and even Schettler’s DU diploma. The place is kept very clean. Schettler likes the restaurant to have a “fast and casual” atmosphere. And fast is right, you can run in and have a great meal in a matter of minutes.
Service and Staff: Service is fast and friendly. I heard Schettler call nearly 50% of his customers by name. His employees greeted and chitchatted with customers; every employee had a smile. Mike appreciates his staff, and his employees reciprocate the feeling.
The Food: Wow! The food is excellent. Everything is made fresh. The Star Market makes cakes, soups, sandwiches, and salads fresh everyday. Schettler buys high quality meats and cheeses and all of the vegetables are fresh.
Surprisingly, all of the food is relatively inexpensive. Sandwiches are only about $5 each and there is a different special everyday. Don’t forget to pick up your Sandwich Club card.
What to Order: The Philly, the Reuben, and the French Dip are very popular. I loved the Philly. The sandwich came out piping hot with fresh sliced mushrooms and bell peppers. The quality of the meat was excellent. No stringy beef at Star Market. Expect good quality. If you’re looking for something healthier, Mike suggests the Cobb Salad or the Chef Salad. Don’t forget to grab a bag of chips and a drink. Star Market’s selection is phenomenal.
Don’t forget dessert. I suggest the Carrot Cake. It was the winner of the Westword Best of Denver. They even sell it at King Soopers. You can taste the freshness and it has gooey cream cheese frosting.
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5.
Star Market’s hours are Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. The restaurant is closed on Sundays.
