Women’s golf: Schaub, Gillam named to 2003 conference team
After dropping to third place early in the tournament, the University of Denver women’s golf team was able to move up and finish a strong second at the Sun Belt Conference Championships in Niceville, Fla., last week.
Denver finished with a 54-hole total of 926, which was 62 over par.
This score was 35 strokes behind leader New Mexico State, which won its third consecutive SBC title with a combined score of 891, 27 over par.
The Pioneers finished eight strokes in front of third-place Arkansas-Little Rock (934), and they finished in second place for the second consecutive year. The championships were held at the Bluewater Bay Resort.
The Pioneers’ top scorer in the tournament was senior Christine Anast, who began the tournament with a 79 and on the second day shot a 5-over-par 77.
She shot a final round 1-over-par 73 that tied for the second-best round of the day and moved her up three spots to a tie for eighth place.
She finished 13 strokes behind New Mexico State’s Alena Sharp.
Recording a 54-hole total of 229, 13 over par, Anast finished as Denver’s best golfer for the second consecutive tournament.
Senior Kelly Schaub, who began with a 76 on day one and shot an 8-over par 80 on day two, tied for 11th place at 156, 12-over par.
Shaub shot a 4-over par 76 on the final day, finishing in 12th place with a 54-hole total of 232, 16 over par.
Two strokes behind her was junior Kate Waggoner, who had a three-round score of 234, 18 over par, and finished in 14th place.
Junior Sara Silva opened the tournament with a 5-over par 77 and shot the same score on day two for a 10-over par total of 154 to stand in a tie for eighth place.
Silva finished the tournament tied for 16th at 236 and sophomore Tessa Gillam finished in 26th at 243.
Schaub and Gillam were both named to the 2003 all-Sun Belt Conference team by a vote of the conferences’ coaches.
It was the first time each woman had been chosen to receive the honor.
After its first-ever bid in 2002, the Pio-neers now wait for word on an at large bid to an NCAA Regional Tournament held at three sites nationwide May 8-10.
Men’s golf: Men shoot 8 over par, 10 behind winner North Texas
The University of Denver men’s golf team finished with a strong second place at the Sun Belt Conference Championships last week in Niceville, Fla.
Although the golf team shot a final round of 4 over par, 292, and picked up four strokes on leader North Texas, it still was not enough to grab a first place finish at the championships held at the Bluewater Bay Resort.
The Pioneers finished with a 54-hole total of 872, 8 over par, which was 10 strokes behind North Texas. Denver, however, held a strong second in front of third place South Alabama, 885.
Leading the Pioneers was sophomore Barrett Jarosch, who on the second day
tied the best round of the tournament with a 4-under-par 68 and moved from a tie for 14th place to third just after the second round.
He shot a second straight 4-under-par 68 and nearly made up a five-shot deficit in the final round to Brad Besler of North Texas.
Jarosch finished with a 54-hole total of 210, which was 6 under par, but Besler was able to beat him by one stroke with a third round even-par 72.
Jarosch did, however, earn a 2003 All-Sun Belt Conference selection by finishing in the top six.
Freshman James Love began the championships as Denver’s top golfer. Following an opening round of 69, he shot a 3-over-par 75 and dropped to sixth place, and then followed that by shooting a 73 on the final day of competition.
Love was Denver’s next highest finisher in seventh place overall with a 54-hole score of 217, 1 over par. Also adding to Denver’s score was junior Jimmy Cunningham in a tie for 17th at 150 and senior Tony Giarratano in a tie for 20th at 7-over-par 151 on day two.
Giarratano finished third for the Pioneers after an even-par 72 put him in a tie for 15th at 223, 7-over par. Cunningham, who shot a 79 on day three, tied for 31st at 229. He was 13-over par.
Senior Shawn Wills shot a 75 on day two after an even-par 72 on the first day of competition, tying with four golfers in 11th place, 10 strokes back.
Wills shot a 9-over-par 81 on day 3.
He finished tied for 28th taking 228 stokes, but he was still honored by being named to the 2003 all-Sun Belt Conference team for his great performance throughout the entire season.
