All the nation’s cultures gathered on the DU campus last week.
The annual Festival of Nations was held on April 5 on the Driscoll Bridge and was sponsored by the International Student Organization.
This year, 39 student organization tables sold food or shared their culture in other ways, such as art displays or calligraphy.
Some of the booth participants were the Russian Student Union, the Taiwanese Student Association, the Saudi Club, DU Pride and the Spanish Club. These are just a small section of the extensive range of perspectives demonstrated at the event.
The food ranged from Thai food to Girl Scout cookies. The event spread across three floors; from the bridge to the Commons, bringing people of all nationalities, ages and cultures together in the festivities.
In addition to the food, there were almost constant performances of song, dance, or martial arts, after the opening ceremony speeches. The performances included: Capoeira Canto de Gallo, which is a Brazillian martial art derived dance, belly dancing, and Bavarian folk dancing.
This may have been the only venue for some of the audience to see these various art forms. The dancing brought energy and a sense of festivity to the event, as well as displaying some of the more colorful and lively demonstrations of different cultures and traditions.
The fair stressed the idea that, in these times of international uncertainty, it is important to share with each other and take the time to celebrate not only our commonality as human beings and members of the world community, but also the diversity that brings excitement and flavor to our world.
The event was a unique way for students to learn about the world through interaction, food, and entertainment.
The Festival of Nations truly encompassed their motto; “Discover Denver’s Multicultural Mosaic.”
