The senior from Saskatoon, Kevin Doell, scored a career-high four goals helping the Pioneers destroy Michigan Tech 7-2 on Friday Feb. 21.
The scoring began when sophomore Jeff Drummond, on assists from Ulanski and Drewicki, put one past the MTU goalie in the middle of the first. The Pioneers extended their lead 7 minutes later as Doell netted his first of the night. Brett Engelhardt of MTU put the Huskies on the board with four minutes left in the first allowing DU to enter the locker room up 2-1.
The lone goal of the second came when Engelhardt put his second past Berkhoel, six minutes into the period tying up the game at two goals a piece.
In the third, the Pioneers came through big scoring five unanswered goals including three from Doell. Lukas Dora and Ulanski had a goal each in the period giving the Pioneers a huge advantage in the game.
On Saturday night, freshmen Gabe Gauthier and Brett Skinner each scored in the final minutes of the third to give the Pioneers the weekend sweep and lift them over the Michigan Tech Huskies 4-3.
J.J. Hartmann opened the scoring seven minutes into the first giving the Pioneers the early lead.
In the second period, Brown and Schwartz each had a goal for the huskies, while Kevin Doell scored his 23rd of the year.
Engelhardt scored his 16th of the season early in the third giving the Huskies the lead by one goal. Then with less than six minutes left in regulation time, Gabe Gauthier netted his eighth of the season to tie the game at three goals a piece. Less than two minutes later Brett Skinner put the winning goal past the Husky goalie while the Pioneers were on the power play. With less than a minute remaining in the game, Greg Keith was hauled down while heading towards an empty net on a breakaway. With the goalie back in, Keith was awarded a penalty shot. Standing room only was available as Keith blazed toward the net, but unfortunately came up empty handed. Even without capitalizing on the penalty shot, the Pioneers still went on to beat the Huskies for the second night in a row.
With the sweep this weekend, the Pioneers move within one point of fourth place North Dakota in the WCHA standings and only 10 points behind number one Colorado College. This weekend, the Pioneers head to Minnesota to take on the gophers and will return home to take on Colorado College on Friday March 7 at 7:35 p.m.
