The Department of Campus Safety welcomes everyone back to campus. We would like to kick off the winter quarter with some safety service reminders.

Please keep in mind that the DU SafeRide program is available to all students and employees of the university. This dedicated shuttle service operates between the hours of 6:30 pm and 2:30 am during the academic year, except during the summer quarter. Anyone with a DU Pioneer card is eligible to use this free shuttle service. For schedule information, please refer to the Campus Safety website (http://www.du.edu/campus-safety) or call 303-871-2334.

The next R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) class will be scheduled for the end of January and/or the beginning of February. This comprehensive course for women is a program consisting of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques, beginning with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, and progressing to hands on self-defense training. The current cost of the program is only $35 and includes a free lifetime return and practice policy. Call Corporal Ray Juan, Jr. at 303-871-2139 for more information.

A new bicycle security program has been instituted on the University Park campus to help combat bicycle thefts. Approximately twenty-seven bicycles were stolen from bicycle racks during the Fall 2002 quarter. The new program requires that all bicycles stored on campus be secured with an appropriate locking device. The department endorses the KRYPTONITE U-Lock, or a heavy-duty, case-hardened chain and lock with links a minimum of 5/16″ thickness. Bicycles which are not appropriately secured will be immobilized with a U-locking device for safe-keeping purposes. This device may be identified by a yellow band attached to the lock. An information notice will be attached to the immobilized bicycle, explaining the procedures for release.

The Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act is a relatively new federal mandate requiring colleges and universities to provide campus community members with clear guidance as to where they may obtain information on convicted sex offenders who enroll or are employed at the college or university. This information may be obtained from the law enforcement agency having jurisdiction where the institution is located. The University of Denver is located within the jurisdiction of the Denver Police Department. Accordingly, this information may be obtained at Denver Police Headquarters, located at 1331 Cherokee Street, between the hours of 7:30 am and 3:30 p.m. Additional information in this regard may be obtained by calling 720-913-6050.

As a reminder, always lock your car, dorm room, office and other areas with valuables. Make sure you register your bike and laptop computer with the Department of Campus Safety. Keep a record of the serial numbers of all your valuables and store in a convenient and safe place.

If you have a safety or security related emergency, please call 303-871-3000 on campus, or 911 if you are off campus. If you have a non-emergent need, call 303-871-2334. Together, we hope to work toward a safer campus community for all.
