The Pioneer Hockey players are ready to take on Minnesota – Duluth this weekend at home after sweeping the University of Alabama – Huntsville Oct. 25 and 26.
This weekend the Pioneers will face-off against the University of Minnesota – Duluth. Friday nights’ game will start at 7:35 while Saturday nights’ game will begin at 7:05. The Pioneers don’t plan to change their basic game plan, but will continue to work on the power play and the penalty kill, Coach Gwozdecky said. “Other teams will have to adjust to us.”
Last Friday and Saturday the Pioneers took on the Wisconsin Badgers to officially open their conference play. “Wisconsin is ready and waiting for us…we are the defending champions [of the conference],” said Gwozdecky. “Two separate wars [were played].”
The two wins over the University of Alabama – Huntsville lifted the Pioneers to an overall record of five wins and one loss. On Fri. Oct. 25, goalie, Wade Dubielwicz rejected 16 of Alabama – Huntsville’s 18 shots while the Pioneers out shot them 41 – 18 to win the game by a score of 7 – 2. the following Saturday, fans were treated to similar success as goalie Adam Berkhoel recorded his third career shut out, turning away all 26 shots. The Pioneers out shot their opponent 37 – 30 winning the game 7 – 0.
Part of the reason for the Pioneers success on Saturday night was the great play of senior Kevin Doell. Doell contributed with a career high of six points, one goal and five assists, to earn the WCHA (Western Collegiate Hockey Association) Offensive Player of the Week award for the week of Oct. 28. This is the first time since December 1995 that a Pioneer player had six points in a single game.
“Kevin has very high expectations for himself and getting the six points will give him more confidence going into our next game,” said Gwozdecky.
Student tickets are for sale at the west-end ticket window for a reasonable price and everyone is urged to come out and cheer for the Pioneers.
