BOTH THE MEN’S and women’s swimming and diving teams competed at the annual CSU Early Bird Invitational in Fort Collins.

The men’s team placed second at this year’s meet, finishing with 866 points, while the women’s team finished fourth with 382 points.

Captain Chase Kelly finished first in the 200-yard backstroke.

Sophomore Caleb Johnson placed first in the 200-yard freestyle, and earned a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle.

John Kolstoe earned points for the Pioneers with his third-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle, as did and John Conyers’ second-place finish in the 3-meter diving event.

Freshman Michaela Amereller led the women’s team with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, and third in the 200-yard backstroke. Other top-10 finishers were freshmenn Holly Leighm Lauren Miranda and sophomore Katie Eisenhard.

Although some swimmers were dissatisfied with their performances, Head Coach Jim Bain said it “was like a practice for the year ahead.”

Both teams compete Friday at 4 p.m. against the Colorado School of Mines at El Pomar Natatorium.
