Crimson beats Gold in annual exhibition
THE CRIMSON SCRIMMAGE team beat the Gold scrimage team by a score of 6-2 in the annual Crimson and Gold hockey exhibition at Magness Arena last week. The Gold team scored six goals overall. Sophomore forwards Jeff Drummond and Colorado native Luke Fulgham each scored two goals for the Gold side. Wade Dubielewicz stopped 26 shots for the Gold team. “Overall, I am really pleased with the effort tonight.” Head Coach George Gwozdecky said. The Pioneers opened their season last Friday and will play again this Friday against Northeastern.
Pioneers land top ranking in coaches pollTHE DU MEN’S hockey team is considered the best in the Western Athletic Conference. Coaches voting on the top teams in the conference ranked DU number one, with six first place votes and 78 points. The second place vote getter was Minnesota which had three first place votes and 74 points. “The fortunate thing for us is that we didn’t lose anyone early to the pros, unlike Minnesota and North Dakota,” Coach Gwozdecky said. “When you lose key players, it definitly puts a dent in your lineup and changes the look of your team.” he said. The Pioneers are ranked number two in the nation.
Men’s soccer loses third straight
IN THEIR MOST recent game, against instate rivals Colorado School of Mines, the DU men’s soccer team recorded a 1-0 loss. The only goal came at the 20 minute mark of the first half. The Pioneers soccer team has lost three straight games dating back to last Friday.The losing streak includes losses to California Polythecnic and California State-Northridge. The team will have an opportunity to snap their losing streak when they play at San Jose State
Mountain bikers ride into sunset
THE UNIVERSITY OF Denver mountain bike’s club season came to an end this past week with the final race in Gunnison. The team did very well for a first-year club. The team finished fourth out of a total of seven in the division. Member Craig Murphy ended the season ranked 21 out of 106 riders.The club hopes for more riders and a better season next year. Cross country at CU Rocky Mountain Invitational.BOTH THE DU men’s and DU women’s teams were in action on Oct. 6 in Boulder. The men’s team finished third out of a field of three behind CU Boulder and the Air Force Academy. The women finished second , behind CU Boulder, in a field of only two.The CU women swept the top five places. Both the CU men and the CU women had 15 points on the day. The Pioneer men finished with 85 points; the Pioneer women finished with 49. The next meet will be the Oct. 26 Sun Belt Conference championship in Denton Texas.
