University of Denver senior Katie Antongiovanni was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week last Wednesday, September 18, by soccer league officials.

Antongiovanni, midfielder for the DU Pioneers, became the second Pioneer to win the award this season.

Junior defender Jamie Norwood was awarded the honor last week.

Antongiovanni earned the honors with her heroics last weekend at the Nike Portland Invitational in Portland, Ore.

She tallied the game-winner, her second of the season, in Denver’s shocking upset of then No. 16 Washington, 1-0, on Friday, September 13.

She also led the Pioneer squad with three shots during the championship game on Sunday, September 15, against No. 7 Portland.

The Pioneers were defeated 2-0.

With her game-winner against the Huskies, Antongiovanni moves into fourth place on Denver’s all-time list with six goals in her career and she is currently tied this season for the team scoring lead with senior captain Kristin Warren. Each has two goals apiece.

The Pioneers, despite suffering their first loss of the season two weekends ago, have cracked the top 25 for the first time in the program’s history with a No. 21 ranking this week’s NSCAA Division 1 national poll.

Denver also jumped three spots to No. 4 in the NSCAA Central Region poll, up from No. 7 two weeks ago.

In addition, Denver is listed at the No. 25 spot in the Soccer America College Women’s Top 25.

The Pioneers are completing their non-conference road schedule when they travel in state to participate in the Colorado Women’s Soccer Classic hosted by the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Denver squared off against Maine on Friday afternoon, September 20, in the opening match at 2 p.m. and finished off the weekend with a Sunday, September 22, tilt against Eastern Illinois at 10 a.m. mountain time.
