THE DU WOMEN’S GOLF team had a strong showing at its Highlands Ranch Intercollegiate, finishing second out of a field of seven.
The Pioneer team shot a 301 (13 over par) over the first 18 holes.
The Iowa State Cyclones led the tournament at the end of the first round by six strokes at a seven over par 295, holding off the Pioneers by three strokes at the end of 36 holes.
The Pioneers had four players in the top 12 at the end of the first round, but all four players were in the top 10 by the end of the second.
All five Pioneer representatives placed in the top 25 in a field of 42. Tessa Gillam was the leading scorer for the Pioneers with a first round 73 (1 over par) putting her in third place.
Despite an excellent second round 74 (2 over par) for a total of 147, she dropped to fourth.
The other Pioneers in the top 10 were Kelly Schaub (+5, 149), who tied for seventh, Christine Anast (+6, 150) who placed ninth, and Sara Silva (+8, 152) who tied for tenth.
Rounding out the Pioneer scoring was Kate Waggoner who shot 157 for the tournament, improving her score by three strokes in the second round and finishing at 13 over par.
The Pioneers finished three strokes behind the Cyclones with a 22 over par 598. The Cyclones finished with a 19 over par 595. This was the best showing by the Pioneers so far this season.
Previous finishes include a 6th place finish out of a field of 14 at the Chip-n-Club Cornhusker Invite and a 5th place finish out of a field of 17 at the CSU/Ram Fall Classic. The team will be in Broomfield Oct. 7 for the Heather Farr Memorial Tournament.
The DU men’s team was also in action for the first time at the Air Force tournament last week. The Pioneers placed second, 17 strokes behind El Paso University, out of a field of 24 with a seventeen over par 881. The Pioneer leader was Shawn Willis who shot a +1 217 over three rounds. The DU men finished with four in the top 20. Willis finished seven strokes behind the leader.
