Three Denver Pioneer hockey stars were selected today to join the Western Collegiate Hockey Association All-Star Team.
Juniors Wade Dubielewicz and Kevin Doell and sophomore Conner James were among 23 college players chosen for the honors.
WCHA Commissioner Bruce McLeod announced the selections for the team that will play exhibitions in Italy.
Don Lucia, former Colorado College coach, will lead the team comprised of stars from what is considered the nation’s toughest college hockey conference. Lucia is presently head coach for the National-Champion University of Minnesota. Dean Blais, the head coach at powerhouse North Dakota, will join Miller as an assistant.
The team will assemble at the University of Minnesota on Aug. 6 for a training session. The team will depart four days later for Italy, where they will play several European teams. The trip will end Aug. 19. The WCHA has participated in similar exhibitions for the last three years. In 2000, Pioneer Head Coach George Gwozdecky led the WCHA team.
Dubielewicz was the nation’s top netminder this past season. He led all WCHA goalies with a 1.79 goals-against-average, fifth lowest GAA in league history. His .943 saves percentage qualified him for not only the school single-season record, but the WCHA single-season record as well.
Doell, co-MVP for the team, scored career bests with 20 goals, 23 assists and 43 points. Doell was tied with Aaron MacKenzie for a team-high 13 power play points. He led the team with a 56.7 percent face-off total.
James scored 16 goals and 26 assists. His 42 points in 41 games placed him second on the team. James will enter next season as a favorite for conference honors.
The tournament schedule has not yet been finalized. The Pioneers, along with Minnesota and Colorado College, each sent three of their best players to join the team.
