SOAR is looking for a wide variety of students to fill SOAR leader positions for next fall’s Student Orientation, Advising and Registration week. Applications are due tomorrow by 1 p.m. in the SOAR office located in the Center for Academic Resources.

“We want enthusiastic students who represent the diverse students here at the University of Denver,” said Lisa Matye Edwards, director of SOAR.

In order to be considered for a position, applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and be in good academic and social standing with the University of Denver. Applicants are expected to have the ability to work in a team environment, strong communication skills and a desire to serve as a resource for new students and parents. Department of Residence staff members are unable to apply to be on the SOAR staff.

The week of SOAR is Sept. 3-8, and SOAR staff members will arrive Aug. 29 for training.

During the week of SOAR, staff members will provide group leadership for incoming students, facilitate activities to assist in registration and help new students and parents feel comfortable.

SOAR staff members are also required to attend spring training sessions and an overnight retreat April 12-13. Staff members will be able to give input concerning what worked well during last year’s SOAR and what improvements can be made. SOAR leaders will receive a stipend of up to $450.

Past SOAR leaders have enjoyed the experience, said Matye Edwards.

“They said they had a lot of fun, made new friends, built their leadership skills and felt like they gave back to the community,” Matye Edwards said.

Applications are available on-line, in residence halls and in the Student Involvement Center.
