I was disgusted at the amount of negativism presented in the “DU YOU THINK” column on the Winter Olympics last week. I was in Salt Lake City the same weekend as the writer was, and I must say, my experience was quite different.

I too am a struggling college student; however, I spent a fair share of money to experience, perhaps, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for myself. Even if you weren’t able to attend the events, the high energy atmosphere presented in the smiling faces of people from all nations was amazing in itself. My mentality going into the games was one filled with expectation for the best and recognizing that this was a special event.

Even though there were long waits, it was well worth it. While waiting in line I was able to make conversation with people from other countries that were eager to ask questions about the United States and were some of the nicest people I have ever met. Not to mention, by waiting in line three hours for a hat, I had the opportunity to meet the sister of Chris Chelios (captain of the U.S. mens hockey team).

If you would have opened your heart a little and expanded your mind by talking with those around you, you would have felt the joy and kindness that Salt Lake and the people there had to offer.
