Oh the weather outside is frightful, and we all know what that means. Yes, it’s Winter Carnival, back for another great year of fun, skiing, and relaxing. But wherefore did our tradition begin? Way back in the day, when DU had a football team and an outburst of snow canceled the annual homecoming game. So DU students planned an event to supplant the festivities of homecoming. A few months later, students took to the hills and the partying began.

Today, the tradition has evolved to a week of events culminating in a ski trip to Keystone Resorts. The first event of the week is the Polar Bear. On Monday, January 21 Joy Burns arena is set to host a broomball tournament. Spots are going quickly so hurry and register your teams. There is a 5-dollar entry fee for the winner-takes-all broomball competition. If you’re interested in watching some girls get dirty, come on out Tuesday, January 22 for Powder Puff. As if that isn’t enough, Eric Passoja, comedian, comes to Sturm auditorium Tuesday night. What’s better to stave off the winter cold than a little home cooked chili? On Wednesday, Winter Carnival boosts a chili cook off and Wacky Winter Olympics. If you’re interested in getting involved, simply talk to Brad Wiles for information (bwiles @du.edu).

At this point, many students believe they have already had so much fun that the fun bucket must be empty. Think again! On Thursday, an assortment of hot drinks, hot tubs, and hot masseuses will assemble on Driscol lawn. This event is followed by the student talent show. Auditions for the show are being held this week Friday the 18th, so get your skills ready. Then, the real fun starts, as the busses depart for Keystone!

So get ready and get hyped. Winter Carnival decided to open up a few extra spaces for the ski trip, so call now and get your reservations (1-800-322-9510, group code GL3GUDW). The other events are open to participation and support. Come on down and partake in the fun and the tradition.
