DU’s men and women’s tennis teams both claimed the 2014 Summit League Championship title this weekend. Both teams entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and walked away victorious.
On Sunday, April 27 at the Colorado Athletic Club in Monaco, the men’s tennis team earned a 4-1 victory over the No. 3 seed, Fort Wayne. With this victory, the Pioneers automatically received a bid to the 2014 NCAA National Championships.

Sophomore Henry Craig and freshman Alex Gasson clinched a strong doubles win for the Pioneers, winning 8-6.

Freshman Diogo Rocha earned the first singles win 6-0, 6-0 for Denver.

To secure the title win for Denver, senior Alex Clinkenbeard won his matches 6-2, 4-6 and 6-1.

The National Championship is scheduled for May 15-26 in Athens, Ga.

Denver’s women’s tennis team collected another Summit League title on April 27.
With a perfect 6-0 conference record, the Pioneers also received an automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Division I National Championships. The last time Denver made an NCAA National Championships appearance was in 2009.

Denver won two of three doubles matches to help seal their victory. Freshman Maureen Slattery and senior Caroline Schnell defeated Fort Wayne 8-1, with senior Natalie Dunn and sophomore Evy Van Genecchten winning 8-3.

The Pioneers posted three straight wins in their singles matches. Sophomore Kathryn Hughes earned her victory 6-0, 6-1.

The National Championship for women’s tennis will be held May 15-26 in Athens, Ga.
