Last Thursday, April 24, two groups of approximately 25 children toured the DU campus for Bring Your Kid to Work Day (BYKTWD). They were all children or grandchildren of DU faculty and staff, and on their tour, which lasted all day, they visited the Anderson Academic Commons, the DU Clarion office, the Diane Wendt Sports Fields and other locations.
The event was organized in part by Aimee Neu, co-chair of the BYKTWD committee and a member of the Staff Advisory Council. Neu, an administration official in Human Resources, said the event was designed to educate kids about future career options.
“The idea is to educate the kids about DU and give them real life examples regarding career paths,” said Neu.
Neu further said the Clarion was a part of BYKTWD due to its history and the role it plays at DU.
“The BYKTWD Committee selected media as a theme and incorporated this with the 150th birthday of the university. The Clarion plays a key role in communicating the changes throughout DU’s history,” said Neu.
Roderick O’Dorisio, Clarion business manager, Camilla Sterne, Clarion lifestyles editor and Alex Johnson, Clarion editor-in-chief, gave presentations to the groups of children.
While at the Clarion office in Driscoll North, the children learned how to write a news story headline, how to conduct an interview and what is involved in the journalistic process. They also toured the office and visited the neighboring PioRadio station offices.
“It was fun to be able to familiarize a group of kids with something they hadn’t previously encountered. It’s always refreshing to see kids’ curiosity,” said Sterne.
O’Dorisio, Sterne and Johnson told the students about college life, as well as explained their respective majors and study areas.
Neu received positive feedback from the around 40 students who participated in the activities.
“My group was funny. We learned so much together,” said one.
The children also got to hear Sterne sing a rendition of The Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine,” a special request when they learned she is a music minor.
