After tying for second on vault at the NCAA Semifinals on Friday afternoon at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, junior gymnast Moriah Martin will advance to Sunday’s individual event finals in vault, boasting a score of 9.925.

By advancing to the event finals, Martin becomes the Pioneer gymnastics program’s fifth-ever All-American and the first since 2009, when Jessica Lopez was honored for the same event.

“We’re really proud of Moriah for making the vault event final and being a First Team All-American,” said head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart. “It’s hard to be here without a team, but she represented the University of Denver and her team with a lot of pride and a lot of character. We look forward to seeing her compete on Sunday afternoon.”

Friday’s performance marked Martin’s second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Semifinals as an individual after placing 12th in the all-around in 2012. She combined for a 38.275 in the all-around to finish 16th in the first session, posting a 9.75 on floor, a 9.425 on bars and a 9.175 on beam in addition to her vault performance on Saturday.

Martin earned her 9.925 on vault after sticking the landing of her Yurchenko full, a vault involving an entry of a round off followed by a back handspring.

“It was really exciting,” said Martin of her vault. “I’m glad that I was able to stick it, and I’m looking forward to Sunday. My goal was to leave here as an All-American, so it feels good to have accomplished that goal.”

Martin will return to action when she competes in the vault event final at Pauley Pavilion on Sunday at 2 p.m.
