“Be a Hero, Save a Life!” was the theme this year for Delta Delta Delta’s second annual dodgeball tournament, bringing together costumed superheroes from DU’s Greek community to dodge for charity.

The tournament took place Friday night in Gates Field House, raising $1,300 for the sorority’s philanthropy.

With 30 teams contributing, up from last year’s 27, about 300 people participated in the tournament and watched the event.

“It got a little hectic but in the end the tournament was so much fun and really successful,” said Marissa Mendleson, Delta Delta Delta’s philanthropy chairman.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the sorority’s national philanthropy.

St. Jude is a national pediatric cancer research center “conducting basic and clinical research into catastrophic childhood diseases, mainly cancer,” according to the Tri Delta national Web site, and is supported by all national chapters of the sorority.

The festivities included a Qdoba-sponsored dinner and a raffle for donated items, such as a signed Avalanche jersey and an I-pod Shuffle.

Additionally, the sorority awarded prizes for best superhero costume and tournament winners. First place in dodgeball went to Phi Kappa, second place went to Kappa Sigma and third place went to Beta Theta Pi.

“Although this was only our second year [putting on this event], we plan to have it every year because it was so fun and every penny gets donated to St. Jude’s,” said Mendleson.

The sorority’s next philanthropic event will be a “Cancer Strike Out” softball game this fall.
