Lecture by Kevin Bales

On Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the GSIS Cyber Café, Kevin Bales will be speaking on contemporary slavery. Bales is the director of Free the Slaves in Washington, D.C. and professor of sociology at the University of Surrey Roehampton in England. He is the world’s leading expert on contemporary slavery.

He has authored three major books on trafficking and slavery including: Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy, Understanding Global Slavery: A Reader, and his new book Ending Slavery: How We Free Today’s Slaves. He will be in Denver to promote this new book. Signed copies will be available at the event, sponsored by the Center on Rights Development. Blood Drive

The DU Greek Community, in partnership with Bonfils, is sponsoring a Blood Drive. If you are interested and able to donate blood, please visit www.bonfils.org to sign-up for a donation time. DU Unplugged

DU Unplugged is a music and comedy open mic night in Sidelines Pub. This new event is sponsored by Late Night @ DU. Come to perform or watch your friends on Wednesday from 8 to 10 p.m. The first 50 attendees/performers will receive a $10 voucher for food and non-alcoholic beverages! Study Abroad Event

The World on Wednesday is an information session for students interested in studying abroad in Spanish-speaking countries. DU Greek Life’s Children Halloween Carnival

On Friday, Oct. 19. from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. DU’s Greek Life will host a Children’s Halloween Carnival. The DU Greek Life’s Children’s Halloween Carnival is open to the Denver community for children 10 years of age and under. There will be carnival games, fun booths and much more. I-House film series

This month’s film will be “Children of Heaven.” The movie was directed by Majid Majidi and is set in Iran. It’s a heartwarming story about a brother who loses his sisters shoes and tries to find a way to get her a new pair.

The movie is also a social commentary on politics and class structure within Iran. The movie is in Persian but subtitled. It runs 89 minutes and snacks will be served.

The movie will be screened at the International House basement and runs from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19. Contact isss@du.edu for more information.

Tri-Delta Cancer Strike-Out

Delta Delta Delta will host their annual philanthropy softball tournament on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. All proceeds go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The event takes place at Cornerstone Park. Attendance is free, but it is a $150 entry fee for teams of 10 people (co-ed).

Step It Up in the Mile High City Step Show

On Saturday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., the Denver Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Denver Delta, Inc. will present the Step it Up In the Mile High City Step Show. Black Greek-lettered organizations from across the Midwest will be stepping. Partial proceeds will benefit the Colorado Sickle Cell Association, Inc. and Denver Kids, Inc. Tell Me Something I Don’t Know
