The No. 16 ranked women’s golf team finished in seventh place at the Mercedes Benz Championship this past weekend in Knoxville, Tenn. DU shot a 54-hole score of 33-over par 885, 20 shots back of champion Florida. In one of the more challenging tournaments of the year for the Pioneers, junior Katie Kempter led the way with an 8-over par 221 good for 21st place. Sophomore Stephanie Sherlock shot a 9-over par 222 for 27th place and junior Sara Djos fired a 13-over par 226 good for 47th place. DU will next be in action Oct. 29 at the UNLV Las Vegas Showdown… The Denver men’s soccer team suffered a disapointing 2-1 defeat at the hand’s of Air force at home this past weekend. The Falcons struck first, but four minutes later sophomore Kellan Christensen scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season to tie the game at one. Just before halftime Air Force struck again and the Pioneers couldn’t find the net in the second half and recorded their first conference loss of the season. DU will play Friday and Sunday at home… The men’s swimming and diving team won for the first time at Air Force on Saturday and went 5-0. DU defeated Metro State, Colorado College, Grand Canyon Swimming, Colorado School of Mines and Air Force. Denver won the 200-medley relay race with a time of 1:34:86. The Pioneers got five individual victories from junior Blake Worsley (200-freestyle), junior Nick Brunger (200-IM), freshmen Garth Summers (100-butterfly), Daniel Vollmer (100-backstroke) and senior Nathan West (500-freestyle). Sophomore diver Cody Stambaugh won both the one and three-meter boards for DU… The women went 9-0 against its competition which included all of the men’s teams plus the University of Nebraska Kearney, Boise State University and Mesa State. Senior Kelsey Totura won both the 200-freestyle and the 100-free and anchored the winning 200-medley relay team. Freshman Katy Motsinger won both the 50-free and 100-backstroke. Also winning for the Pioneers were Michele Lowry (1000-freestyle), Olivia Dean (200-IM), Hayley Ettleson (100-butterfly), Lindsay Brown (500-freestyle) and Grace Kittle (100-breaststroke)… Denver junior Kaja Smole won the single’s title in flight five at the Air Force Invitational on Sunday after defeating Texas Tech’s Leah Roberts. Freshman Bhavani Tirumurti finished third in flight three after defeating Memphis’ Marjorie Ondeck. Mikele Smith finished fourth in flight six, Ute Schnoy finished fifht in flight one and Julia Bauregger placed fifth in flight two.
